RIP: A Remix Manifesto

This movie was intriguing and incredibly relevant to the contemporary art concept of photography and art of the world today! Post appropriation is very relevant for many artists created work now.

1. Culture always builds on the past.
So why can't we use the past for present work. Just like writing, only a portion of the writing can be used in its original form. Why is it that we can not create work with portions on others works to create our own? I feel as if this would be the greatest homage to the original artist, to have been chosen to be reevaluated. The truth is the world is built upon millions of people, and those people create things. WE ALL DEVELOP ON THEM! There is no way in 100 percent certainty to say that we are all creating truly original works of art.

2. The past always tries to control the future.
This is truth as well. We are always growing and developing on what has been done in the past. The ultimate truth behind it all is all knowledge used to be part of the public domain. When did it become necessary to jump through hoops and ladders to use what people showed the world for general knowledge and use. I feel as if it is not even the people creating the work, but rather the lawyers behind the people creating the work that make it such a big deal to use the work for more work. I would be totally honored if my work was used for further growth and development.

3. Our future is becoming less free.
Big media is the main problem, the own and control our culture. People are getting fined by stealing "intellectual property." Intellectual property is something that is growing. I have not downloaded music and used it directly in a project, but I have used the lyrics, tone, and mood of music I love to inspire my art. Should I be fined for that? Literally, words mashed up for lyrics all over a canvas, with no rhyme or reason to the logic of their location, but the whole song is there. Is that not the same concept and idea of what people are not suppose to be doing? Sue Me.

4. To build free societies, you must limit the control of the past.
I think this describes itself. The past is relevant and necessary, but needs to be used as a building tool for the future to come. Without it just being that we are limiting what we can do with what we have been given.
