Walead Beshty has created a new piece called the Curve containing about 7000 cyanotypes. He has created cyanotypes of objects used for the time period of the creation of the show. The empty space or promise of a talk or of a thing is what he is trying to portray. How we relate and see things of the world and how we react to them. He was inspire by the curve of the space, and the panorama, which was popular for the time frame of the start of cyanotypes. It all links together in his mind as a transparent picture.
I find this space transformative. You have no idea where to start or where to end and I believe that to be the point. He wants you to question all the objects, the images of the objects (photograms), and what the pictures of the objects are on. He mentions finding movie tickets and newspaper articles and printing on them. Why? That is the question. It is a collection of found and appropriated objects, photographs being exposed on them, and collaged on display for many to question what the world is around them. I think it is a brilliant way to do this and have to questions raised. He made one piece a day for the creation of the exhibit.
I love personally, that he has shown so much with so little use of photographic media. He has his chemistry, light, and his objects. He does not uses a camera to create this work, much like this works before this with light rays and photosensitive paper. I want to try and think more photographic with less photography like him.
