Sara= William Eggleston-

• ·      Great Handout- 1974 portfolio of dye transfer prints
• ·      Does not really title work, he just puts them in a series
• ·      William Eggleston’s Guide- 1976, curated by Szarkowski- at the MOMA- introduced color photography to the fine art world.
• ·      Really frank with people.
• ·      Troubled waters series- 1980 15 prints
• ·      “What am I going to take pictures of? Everything is so ugly!”-WE “Well photograph the ugly stuff.”-Wife
• ·      He only takes one picture of one thing- he said it was so confusing on picking which one was better that he doesn’t bother with it anymore.

Rachel= Shana- Robert ParkeHarrison-

• ·      Paper positive negatives with sewing and putting huge images together never any Photoshop.
• ·      Has lots of series with added subseries.
• ·      Environmental despair.
• ·      “The Gardener”- Robert Park Harrison is the model
• ·      “Making Rain”- overconsumption and carelessness on earth
• ·      Human with technology
• ·      “Restoration”- sub series promise the land
• ·      “Pollination”
• ·      “Edison’s Light”
• ·      Robert is the model and photographer, Shana is the set designer
• ·      “Mending the Earth”- Timothy image of Nevada is appropriated for the background.
• ·      “Suspension”- Most images overlaid in the series.
• ·      Uses wax in a lot of their work, adds texture to the front of the images.
• ·      “Tree Stories”- sub series kingdom
• ·      “The Collector”
• ·      Uses familiar exaggerated every day occurrences.
• ·      “Passage”, “Airway”, “Burn Season”, “Lucid Dream”
• ·      University of New Mexico is where they studied. This stuff she showed us is more Robert than Shana. The later color work is more influenced with Shana. Very little background information was given on the individuals.
• ·      Research why they chose paper negatives and layers with encaustic to create photographs that look like paintings.

Anna= Carrie Mae Weems-

• ·      Born in 1953
• ·      Does photography and video
• ·      Got a degree in photography and folklore
• ·      Started as a dancer
• ·      Construction of history- the perception of black stereotypes
• ·      From Here I saw what happened and I cried
• o   Appropriated image
• o   Black people were being treated as specimens
• ·      Daguerreotypes- debunking racial stereotypes- “What is Identity” Takes the subject and flips the view.
• ·      Confronts by making us uncomfortable.
• ·      Applies deep red color, with comparison to history style photographs, it used to not show the color of skin with her subject matters
• ·      Later work African Jems and Jewels- reimage how we look at blacks with the colors in the series.
• ·      The kitchen table series- negotiation of space, intimate invasion. Appear documentary but are staged, challenging black female narrative. She becomes the subject and the photographer. Identity, race, gender, class is all questioned. Beauty of a woman’s solitude. Evocative, mysterious, dramatic.
• ·      “I looked and I looked to see what terrified you”- constructs her own sexuality, self criticism and love, why should she be judged?
• ·      Slow Fade to Black- appropriated ethereal images.  Trail blazing African woman, giving them color and vibrancy bringing them back to life, she blurs them, asks us to look at the forgotten history.
• ·      Series- Roaming 2006- explores black female controlling her life, women are not given and equal platform to man. Female space in relationship to male architecture, power and control of body.  Gendered space dialog.
• ·      Ain’t Jokin (1987)
• ·      Contrasting relationship to reality- Mean to be humorous and witty with intimate images about stereotypical cultural images. Creates a tension, the stereotypes are created by the viewer not by the subjects.
• ·      Operation: Activate- in relation to cops and black people.
• ·      Family Pictures and Stories (1981)- 1965 deterioration of African life is because of them- there is a report.
• ·      Multi dimensional portrait, daily messy crowded and hopeful images of the family.
• ·      Blue Note- 2015- blurring images adding blocks of colors- interpretation is key.

Morgan= David Hilliard-

• ·      Born 1964 in Massachusetts
• ·      Panoramic Photos
• ·      Staged Photography
• ·      BFA Mass College of Art
• ·      MFA Yale
• ·      “Rock Bottom” 2008- focuses on personal, familiar, ordinary
• ·      Reoccurring theme of him and his father
• ·      Physical distance represents emotional images
• ·      Creates panoramic photos with single images in different angles to guide the viewer the way he wants too.
• ·      Ebb, 2012 the tale is true series- Father son narrative again
• ·      “Some days have gone”
• ·      “Again”- one of his only vertical
• ·      “Two cowboys, Two horse” very challenging perspectives
• ·      “His Problem with Plurality” 1998
• ·      Very short presentation- Q- is his mother present? A- his work is predominantly male didn’t read anything about it though. Q- Was the little boy his son? A- Not that I know of.

Briana= Philip- Lorca diCorcia-

• ·      American Photographer- before that he was really into drugs- him and his friends overdosed, his friend died, he pursues photography
• ·      MFA- Yale
• ·      Body of Work- A Storybook Life 16 images
• o   “Hartford”
• o   The idea of having a book and putting them in a sequence creates a story that he wants to explore with the audience
• o   Staged images- almost look like film stills
• ·      BoW- Hustlers, Male prostitutes in LA
• o   Got National Endowment of the Arts
• o   “Chris, 28 years old, Los Angeles, California, $30”- the cost he had to pay to take the photograph
• o   He randomly picked up people asking the to take a picture, most didn’t believe but came anyway.
• o   Real job of prostitution but in a staged setting
• o   “Ralph Smith, 21 years old, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, $25.”
• o   He didn’t take a chance to get to know these people. It was just a transaction.
• o   Glamorous images of a not so glamorous lifestyle.

Maya= Mariko Mori-

• ·      Started at fashion school and started working with fashion photographers
• ·      Women, Gender, Japanese society. In her own reality.
• ·      “Tea Ceremony III”- 1995 played is an interplanetary geisha
• ·      “Empty Dream”- 1995 she digitally placed herself in it
• ·      “Birth of Star”- 1995, play on Japanese idols, includes a CD
• ·      “Miko no Inori”- Video- very stylized, not my favorite.
• ·      Combines spirituality and characters she comes up with.
• ·      Intended to put you in a mediated state.
• ·      Connects fashion with play
• ·      “Warrior”- 1994 entering the gaming world.
• ·      She does not take the photos; she just controls the entire scene.
• ·      “Love Hotel”- 1994 school girl outfit and alone, innocent.
• ·      Her in red light district of Japan, lots of moving people that Maya describes them as a “ghost town”
• ·      Q- What does she say about her work? A- She likes Cos-play and the young Japanese culture.
• ·      3D Video Nirvana (1996-97)- technological has puffs of different air. Buddhism is prevalent, she appears as a deity. Beauty clarity and happiness.
• ·      Kumano- Video art, 3 characters shaman, floating angel, and mysterious fairy.
• ·      Burning Desire 1998- connection of elements. She is the central figure.
• ·      Mirror of Water 1998- floating alien head
• ·      Last Departure 1996- cyber girl, inspired by Astro Boy. Inside of Japanese airport
• ·      Pratimba- Past, Present, Future installation piece for her Buddhist area
• ·      Tom Na H’iul-LED lights real time changing.
• ·      Cyclicscape- 3D printing and cyclic nature of nature with time and space.
• ·      Capture the essence of the ocean paintings
• ·      “Wave UFO’ 1999-2002- engages all the senses, brainwave interface, vision dome, projector, computer system, fiberglass- wanted to create an Alien area.
• ·      “Dream Temple” 1997
• ·      “Body Capsule” place body capsule in 13 different place, it was great and different because she went from city to outside spaces.
• ·      “Primal Rhythms”- installation on the moon solstice the shadow creates a straight line.
