Artist Presentations 1 Continued

1.     I went first!!
2.     Nathaniel- Thomas Demand= He describes himself as a Conceptual Artist- makes Large Scale 3-D Models made out of paper and cardboard. 1993 began using photograph more heavily.  He photographs his installations. The Grouto- 30+ pounds of cardboard. Detailed photos but subtle flaws. Reconstructions that are close but not perfect so truth and not will be clear. Social or politically charged work, particularly German history. Photography is all about truth and reality. Bureau- the fall of the berlin wall.  No information on the papers, just the feeling from the event of them storming buildings for more information.  Bathroom- German politician found dead in his bathroom. This is his recreation. Podium- Location where Serbian dictator gave a speech of the anniversary of defeating the Turks. Attempt- Artist studio, terrorist in Germany targeted the artists studio to get the politician next door. Kitchen- Sadam Husain kitchen. Yellowcake- Presidency 1, 2, 3, 4, 5- build spaces out of cardboard. Of the presidents areas and his idea of them. No writing on the paper, no stars on the flag, aiming for the idea to see something about the space you have not seen before. The Dailies- favorite of Nathaniel’s, it is more relatable. Photographed around town and recreated in the studio. It allows more of a viewer based narrative in this body of work. All have elements of human beings without having human subjects in them. Q- does he put stuff outside or is it all constructed? A- completely constructed. Q- how long does it take to create this stuff. A- I do not recall exactly.
3.     Hanna- Sandy Skoglund= born Sep 11, 1946. Her childhood is important for her later work. Middle class, Cape Elizabeth, LA, Deer Born, Houston. She could recreate herself in each new city traveling for her dads work. Smith College 1964-68 University of Iowa. Hangers, 1979. Cookies on a Plate, 1978. Mass production and commercial style of America and advertisement. Very colorful imagery. “Art is not about making sense. When it sounds like I am making sense, and talking about my work, it is all hindsight; and it’s all kind of another person from a person who was there making the work at the time” Radioactive Cats, 1980. She threw away some of the first cats and saw them in the windows of her town. Maybe Babies, 1983. Humans are corrupt in this universe. Abortion maybe, reached many people. Germs Are Everywhere, 1984. Revenge of the Goldfish, 1981. Goldfish is supposed to have a sexual sensation to it, child’s playmate. Germs – soaked gum and a one two chew. Hits on the disgusting habits of humans, in the sanction of your home. Fox games, 1989. The red room is the first installation. Then flipped the color to get a different view. Red room is more like an infestation; they look like cats or rats. The grey has people and the red foxes make it more playful. Walking on Eggshells 1997 took her 2 years to create. Most of this is created with paper. Picnic on Wine, 2003. Objects and subjects on top of fragile material. The Cocktail Party, 1992 took a long time about dialogs and interactions. Breathing Glass. Raining popcorn, atomic love-Raisins. The medium of photography allows her installations to last a lifetime. Spirituality in the Flesh 1992- made with meat. Body Limits 1992 made with meat.
4.     Chelsea- John Pfahl= American born in 1939. Conceptual Photography. “People think the camera steals their soul. Places, I am convinced, are affected in the opposite direction. The more they are photographed the more soul they seem to accumulate.” MA in 1968. Taught at Rochester… Missile/Glyph series-Petroglyphs- indigenous people created the bottom of these. Missiles at the top. The end of culture through bombing and the beginning of life together. Fat Man Atomic Bomb/Great Gallery Pictographs in comparison with Hiroshima nuclear blast shadows after the atomic bomb was dropped. Reinforces beginning and end of culture. Picture windows series. 2 parts from each series East and West. Viewing through a window is a different experience than being outside. Widows are cameras with a fixed view. East=31 price street, 483 Highgate, 11000 Southwest 57th Avenue. West= Lane Ranch Road, 327 College Way, 228 Grant Street. Power places Series. Power companies with picturesque landscapes, all need water for the manmade structures were created. Connection between power and natural landscapes. Crystal River Nuclear Plant. The names of the power plants resemble the area surrounding them. Windmill. ERB-1 nuclear plant. Four corners power plant. Smoke Series. Bethlehem more colorful, about movement and color. “A phantasmagoria of light and color.” Beautiful images of something so awful for the earth. He says the happen like geysers.
5.     Amanda- Jeff Wall= Born September 29, 1946. MA 1970 stopped making art till 1977. Makes Backlit photo transparences. Mimic, The Destroyed Room, A sudden gust of wind (After Hokusai) 1993= over 100 individual photos. “I am haunted by the idea that my photography was al a big mistake.” He is not a real photographer because he stages his photograph. Dead troops, Milk 1984, Overpass 2001, Property Line (2015) between the continents. Listener 2015, represents a hostage situation. Approach 2014 created in 2 months, it is not understood if it was staged with humans or just the setting. It was taken under a freeway though.  He sees scenes, thinks about them, then trys to recreate the scene.

6.     Riva-Shizuka Yokomizo= Born in Tokyo and lives in London. “You are behind the window?” She captures images through windows, without knowing the models you can tell a lot from their facial and body expressions. She replaces the sense of physical and emotional distance with a world of intimacy. Rather than looking outward to acknowledge the camera the subjects looks inward. Untitled, 1997 involves her own self. Simple people in a simple familiar setting. Doorways in some of her imagery with vibrant colors. Interesting light sources. Eastern Jampanese Culture. Shibui (subtle) means simple, subtle, or unobtrusive. It means that things are more beautiful when they are not directly speaking out. Just want you to imagine. Sleeping series images of friends sleeping. Presence, solitude, relationship between private and subtle, self and other. Stranger Series. Is this like a peeping tom? No because the people are entitled to refuse. Dirty Window by Merry Alpern and she took pictures of people in the bathroom at a low rent sex club.
