Project 1
Class Discussion
1.
Patrick- he did a voice over, how and I
was told not to get into that yet. He focused on focus as his theme. Zoomed a
little bit, the curiosity of the kitten. Something ordinary stays interesting.
Layered over the “philosophy of time” by Alan Watts. Timeless with the black
and white footage. Best focal play was when it went from the dirt to the knee
through the cat’s leg. Most interesting for Fabian was the concept of time,
this experience of time, by human, animals, and plants. It reminds him of “deep
time.” Maybe have the use of a tripod for a steadier image in the future.
Possibly use a large piece of foam to stabilize on the ground. Fabien likes the
voice over, just not the music. It strategically puts on in a comfortable place
where it limits creativity and new elements of viewing the footage. Possibly use a different Watts voice over,
the consciousness of focus- as a spotlight.
2.
Sara- Stopped action of nature- Time and
seasonality. Fast to slow with the stop motion- Possibly use night shots to
help push the time aspect. An hour has passed in 48 seconds. Seemed real time
but it was apparent that it wasn’t, so the audience is viewing it in a
different way. She also played around
with the focus. Ends on out of shape objects. Focusing on the remnants of
summer. Virtually shaking them and almost violent, taking them away from their
comfortable protected area. No sound was a good choice. All actual stills, no
video clips were used. Intentionally choppy.
3.
DeCarlo- Focus is very abstract, auto
focus and zoom, that moment before you are conscious after sleeping and being
asleep. Very impressive, I enjoy this a lot. No audio, to engage with the
video. Very nice transitions from dark to light, very believable for the idea
and concept. All happened at 3:35pm, so he involved the shot of his phone.
Great build up to the actual idea. Fabian likes the radical light in the
beginning of it. References James Terrell. Jonathan Crary- the importance of
sleep.
4.
Molly- liked the graininess of the
underexposed images, liked the underexposed better than the started with more
interesting then to the less, became very predictable, have a crafty nature,
idea of artist in general not just me as an artist. Musical in a sense, with
the exposure. Repeated nature was almost machine like with organic objects. A mechanic
way of looking at the world, it becomes more machine than imagery, like a
metronome. Almost as if the human
element is not present anymore. The intention of the machine. Everything looks
the same to the machine not lets break that up. Break it up with
intentionality. More focus on some than others.
5.
Salvador– Very comedic in the beginning,
becomes serious as it goes along, blending of cultures, talks about fingers and
eyes and nose. God, creation, and time
were present in this world. Catholic and Mayans. The idea of no focus. This is
a poem, but more spontaneous for this one. Definitely went with the ideas,
flesh colored for fingers, grey colors for eyes, ocean= more movement, the blur
asks as a mask, you hear and listen instead of focusing on the details of the
imagery. Incredible that he thought of ideas and spontaneously spoke on the
camera, the out of focus nature added to the spontaneous idea of the video.
6.
Ivan- Lacing up your agencies. All about
sneakers, Athletic to consumption, he considers them as sports history,
nostalgia, an investment; important- used Jordan in particular because it is
iconic. No audio, forgot to activate the layer, not artistically chosen.
Ultimate black figure, dominant and prominence as a black male and athletic
figure. Is this a good representation of professionalism? The zoom shows the
culture and currency in the shoes and that the focus is on them, wanted a
kaleidoscope effect for the imagery. Fabian asks, how do you represent this
visually without having to talk about it or write about it to show those not
aware of these topics. This is a knowledgeable video to clarify the importance.
Show videos of walking and pedestal images, is this just a shoe, show the
dichotomy of the ideas of these sneaker heads. Has great foundation for project
2. Show these in the cultural aspects of
how they are using this for a commodity. Fabian- says the first German house of
representative from the green party showed up in white sneakers- push it
further. Possibly show demographics of who buys this. Neoliberal kind of
classicist. Mainly black and brown
people buy it because of pop culture. “Jiggy”- representation of things they
call shoes – fresh fly nice. Multilayer representation of what sneakers could
be called.
7.
Boyd- I spy is the title of this piece-
very comedic and playfully playing with surveillance systems and how they can
zoom in and out. Surveillance culture is using fear and security to place them
everywhere. Would change the subjects shot, and the way the audio matches the
video. Big brother and can you hide or not? This is brought to you by Government. He wants to play on this
more. Person of interest- watching that show. Playfulness comes from Sol Williamson.
Playful and sarcastic. Push it further use alllllll these different imagery and
tile them or make multiple images of yellow.
Maybe replay audio over and over. Fabian- dominance and privilege, can I
not see it and I should? Was wanting the timestamp but it did not stay. Maybe
make the zooming more intentional. Technology is in our minds “old” but it is
fairly new in comparison to other outputs of media. Fabian- seems like a test
but a great one!
8.
Cal- White Balance, very funny, about a
girl smiling at a man, the different ways you can view things in your train of
thought, breaks up into different sequences with cuts. White balance is
following the tone of his train of thought. I definitely got the concept; the
best tonal change was when it went cooler. Daydreaming aspect. He was the
narrator/ voice over. Maybe change the perspective of images show passage of
time, missed the smile from the girl. The colorful walls help show the shift in
White Balance. Fabian- play with time and a space with relationship to show
this jumping of time and thought.
