Project 2 Discussion
Continuity and Montage

Ivan- “The Nike Hercules” Icon+ Moment= Cool. Nike Zeus footage pared with iconic basketball footage.  Sweatshop idea with the Nike made for children by children. Artistic questions.  Michael Jordan and missile are both super human. Michael Jordan is a tool for American capitalist system. Kanye West is the most powerful man in America. Need more images? Needs to show more American symbolism. We don’t need to look at it as empowering, hit them more in the face with the Made for children by children. He has a plan and an idea just not the means for it. Like to do simple and meaningful over, exaggerated like what is in his mind.  Needs to balance a little better with his premiere editing. Possibly use a storyboard.

DeCarlo- KKK and how to have a party intro, he wants more, it is great and intense.  It is very systematic in the imagery, the truth behind the dialog. Very powerful in its imagery and ideas: KKK video, the March video, instructional audio. The message is very clear and it makes me hate my hometown heritage. Using 2 visual sources makes it more connected. He leaves the audience with a question; does it need more? Needs a longer, stronger, emphasis on the last image. A real emphasis on the intensity of the last shot. Bitch face on lock.

Patrick- Shift perspective of drinking alcohol. Creepy home videos. Make people feel uneasy. Family time into more serious as you go.  Word Salad, “Take a Pill” was the audio. Use of children in the beginning to make it uneasy and make you think something bad was going to epically happen. Nice footage placed together. School if you drink it you will die and then people are drinking. Nice build up of the sequence. Create a much more radical hot/ cold treatment.-Fabian- Why did I actually watch this in the end? Seeing what you see when you are drunk while not being drunk. Driven by sound and images together, he wonders if the images could do the same.  Cause and effect. Progression of perception.

Sara- “I Wanna Be Bad” Old imagery to song “I wanna be bad”- Helen Cane was Betty Boop. Used Betty Boop as the idea behind the video. The interaction between the person was operating the camera and those looking at the camera.  Very Sara, which makes me proud and jealous. Very innocent in nature. Fabian wants to see beyond or through the innocence. What does it mean to be in front of the camera. How you contextualize and talk about it is the key. Add in some stoicism to give a vision of the bad nature. Whimsical but needs to have a change, bad to worst, or composed to bad. People change the instant they see they are being recorded.  Historical context seems very strong. The luau girl was the only sense of diversity, every other was very American TV. Genuine moments that these individual women are expressing. The importance of the pre-digital genuine cherished moment.

Molly- Animals, using other methodic steps, better fade out, rewrap the audio.

Carl- Groundhog day. No meaning behind it, besides it would be fun to do. Groundhog and Popeye with a gopher which is close enough to a groundhog.  No specific plan on doing anything but the ground hog day audio, so he chose Popeye because of the gopher. The nature of cartoons is repetitive, slightly different every time. How could this be used more on a critical context, what would it mean to repeat the images over and over and over again.  Maybe more challenging footage. Maybe 9-11 and profound change in the nature of human beings.

Salvador- Play on American society and tragedy. America the Brave. Historical processes and events. For me, needs lots of explanation. Genocide against humanity in Hiroshima and it was all for American freedom, who are we fighting for? “It is good to be critical of our country.”  Critique on the US. The US is the world police. Juxtaposition of bullying and America. Better for the nature of the draft, I agree with Sara’s instincts on the first of the video. Wanted moments of satire. Develop more with reason or ration. Juxtapose this is why we do this/ family then atomic bomb (example). Need to make it more focused on domestic issue the US is having. “It is a story of the American violence” More balanced in the idea world, not so much in the video world. Single out one specific event to clarify the issue.

Boyd- America is always selling people a dream or answer no matter what it is. Propaganda, back in the 60s people would use cartoons for votes. Chasing the American dream. Wants to add in the elephants dream footage. Cartoon to reality and back around. Wants it to be comical and serious, like propaganda. Maybe show powerful people with those who are not profiting as opposed to just showing those struggling. Everyone is having time constraints. "It is complete but incomplete"
