Post Modernism

  • "After the Modern"- it is hard to define
  • Philosophies and aesthetics of Moderninsm after WWII start in the 1960s and is more of a way of thinking than a style, unlike the other artistic "isms"
  • Feminisms and Post structuralism are contained within Postmodernism.
  • "If Modernism was concerned with progress, the Postmodernist would ask 'Progress as defined by whom'"
  • Photography becomes cultural literacy and currency- we strongly start to believe a photograph more than reality. - our understanding of history, self, reality is based on a photograph.
  • Postmodernism invites cross pollination to mix medias.
  • Umberto Eco- definition from "unfortunately post modernism is at erm bon a tout faire [good for all things] I have the impression that it is implied today to anything the user…"
  • Postmodernism vs Before Postmodernism
    • Postmodernism- Subjective and situational
    • Before- Point of documentation "to tell the truth", narratives produced by photos.
  • Pop Art- one of the first postmodern movements
    • used signs and symbols of mainstream and commercial culture and appropriation
    • Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg
    • Pop Culture
