Five Obstructions
Five Obstructions was a great film to watch, to give insight into how a mentor, student relationship works. You can either stand for only the way you want to do it or go with the flow. In going with the flow you realize things you may have not realized about the work you are trying to create. It was very interesting to see what work was created, but saying the same thing in five different ways. I would like to try this with my own work. I wonder some times, would this work better with nudes, or would it work better this way. When it comes to art it is incredibly subjective and very biased for the person creating the artwork. I think it would do us all some good to try and do it the opposite of what we had envisioned. It was most impressive to me when the mentor, who hates cartoons, told the student to produce a cartoon. They were both pleasantly surprised. It was in my opinion, the strongest of the obstructions. The dynamic of the mentor was challenging and forceful towards the student. It was enlightening how the student did everything that the mentor wanted and did it very well. He found out more about himself than he realized. The mentor says at one point that he knows the student better than he does. That is how the fifth and final obstruction came about. It in a round about challenged the student and made him realize more about himself. I am looking to challenge myself in this way, see if my obstructions come out as well executed as I imagine it will.
